Levels of development, type 9
Type 9 Levels of Development: the rung you settle on
The band on your result says which third of the ladder you're in and stops there: no rung, no direction. What follows is the ladder of a Nine, rung by rung, the two lines where the peace changes hands, and three questions for finding your own rung. The one thing that doesn't move is the type: a Nine on rung one and a Nine on rung nine are the same type, differently placed, and the ladder changes a state, not a person.
01
The nine levels
Level 1
Peace handed on
A Nine hands peace on without spending themselves to make it: fully in the conversation, hearing the other person and their own answer at once, muting neither. Presence here is an act, not a pause between other people's requests. From outside, this is the person who raises the awkward subject first and does it so that nobody at the table tightens up.
Level 2
Presence without effort
What comes, a Nine takes without grading it in advance, and that isn't the same as giving way: their own view is in place, it simply doesn't fight the other person's view for room. Peace is handed out like air, and there's enough of it for everybody. From outside: people tell this Nine things they've told nobody else, and don't regret it afterward.
Level 3
Making other people's peace
A Nine goes out to others with what they have, joining people who can't hear each other and translating one side's grievance into the other's language. Peace is still given, now with effort, but the effort is free and nobody gets billed. From outside: the one two people call when they've hit a wall, and both are still at the table when the call ends.
Level 4
Yes before the question
The turn: peace stops being what a Nine brings and becomes what they expect of the room. So that the room won't shift, the Nine fits themselves to it from the outside, agreeing ahead of any view of their own. From outside: the weekend plan is always somebody else's, and the Nine doesn't notice until somebody asks what they would have chosen.
Level 5
Participation on mute
A Nine stays in the room but not in it: the body at the meeting, the attention elsewhere. Peace is required of others by absence rather than agreement: where the Nine isn't present, there's nobody to bruise. The role is the person with no particular needs, which suits everyone. From outside: asked what they think, the Nine reports what the others think.
Level 6
Contact switched off
Peace is taken from others by quiet force: the Nine drops out of contact and leaves the person beside them without an answer, doing what they couldn't stand done to themselves. The problem is declared nonexistent, so there's nobody to argue with. From outside: a direct question gets 'it's fine,' and the talk ends because the door is bolted from inside.
Level 7
The problem denied
Past the line: what the Nine was avoiding has walked into the room, and the answer is denial. The debt, the leak, the person leaving are filed under 'not yet'; peace is defended not against people but against reality, and the defense wrecks what it was keeping. From outside: mail unopened for months, not out of fear, but because it 'isn't there.'
Level 8
Motions, nobody home
Work goes on, the yeses and noes go on, and there's nobody inside doing it: events go past like station announcements, heard and not received. Peace is finally safe, because there's nothing left to guard. From outside: the people closest say talking to them is like talking through glass, and the Nine can't tell what they mean.
Level 9
Leaving the self behind
The last turn: the Nine gives up neither the argument nor the connection but themselves as a participant. Disappearing isn't decided; the one who could decide is gone, and the peace everything was for goes to an empty place. From outside: days without leaving bed, neither rest nor protest; nobody is looking after this person, least of all the person.
02
How the descent begins
- with room to spareThe core is given freelyFirst border: what was free becomes required
- with neither aheadThe core is demanded from othersSecond border: the fear comes true
- in the gripThe core is defended, destructively
The first line runs where the fitting-in changes direction. On the top rungs a Nine adjusts from the inside: they hear the other person and answer from where they stand. Over the line the adjustment comes from the outside: agreeing in body and word before anything inside decided, so the peace a Nine once brought is now owed to them. The first step is barely visible: a Nine takes a little longer over what they want, then hands the question back. From here on, peace is required of others: of whoever's talking, that they not lean; of the day, that it pass without corners.
The second line runs along a fear the middle rungs kept at a distance. What a Nine put off was never the task but the meeting with what it means, and on rung six they still held on by saying nothing. Past the line, putting off stops working: reality arrives uninvited, as a deadline, a bank letter, an ultimatum, demanding attention now. The fear comes true in the shape it was feared. The lower band loses the ability to raise its own alarm; from rung seven it is raised only from outside, by the people the Nine left unanswered on rung six.
03
What brings you back up
- with room to spareSecond return: not the same as feeling better
- with neither aheadFirst return: an action possible only from this side of the border
- in the grip
One action brings a Nine back out of the lower band, and it can't be done from any higher: admitting, by name, that the problem exists. In the middle there's nothing to admit, problems there are 'not urgent.' From below it's the only one: not solving, not doing, just saying 'yes, this is so, and it's mine.' Once a Nine calls the bill their own, they're on rung six: the silence is over. Everything the middle lives on follows, irritation included, and it counts in their favor: an irritated person is present.
Coming back into the top band differs from 'feeling better' by one mark, and it isn't mood. A Nine feels better whenever the room levels out; that's the middle: the peace came from outside. The top begins when a Nine brings their own view into the conversation without first checking whether it suits the others, and stays if it doesn't. While the yes goes ahead of the opinion, the rung is four, whatever the mood. When the opinion goes ahead of the yes and nothing tore, that's three.
04
Where you are now
Freely, or because you have to
Has the fear come true
Where you return after a good week and after a bad one
The result shows a band, not a level
Think of the last time you gave way. Was it because you heard the other person and what you wanted stayed with you, or because disagreeing would have made the evening heavy? In the first case you gave the peace: with room to spare. In the second you bought it at your own price: with neither ahead. The mark: as you gave way, did you know what you wanted?
Has the thing you weren't touching already arrived? Not 'might arrive,' arrived: the deadline passed, the person left, somebody else opened the letter. If it's still at a distance and you decide when to walk up to it, you're with neither ahead, however long you've put it off. If it's here and you're saying nothing is happening, the line is behind you: in the grip.
And where you settle. After a week that came together, where do you go back to: a conversation where you hold an opinion, or a quiet where nobody asks? After a week that went wrong: to irritation, which at least says something, or to a level 'it's fine' with nothing of you behind it? Your rung is neither the best week nor the worst; it's the place you come home to from both.

Questions
How long does it take to move up one rung?
Two answers, both honest. The rung a Nine lives on, the habitual one, moves over years: the center of gravity shifts slowly because it rests on a thousand small concessions a day. The rung a Nine is standing on right now moves within hours: one bill named out loud takes you from seven to six today. The years go on making days like that stop being the exception.
Can a Nine in the lower band turn into another type?
No. A Nine goes down their own ladder: on every rung they're doing something with peace, and on rung nine it's still peace, just delivered to an empty place. Another type in the lower band wrecks something else. From outside, a Nine in the grip can look like anyone at all; from inside, the machinery is the one from rung one, it just no longer answers to them.
I hardly ever argue. Is that with room to spare or in the grip?
Silence on its own says nothing; on the ladder it stands on rung two and on rung eight alike. What separates them is what goes on inside you while you're silent. On two you have an answer and decided not to put it forward. On eight there is no answer and nobody went looking for one. Test it on the next argument other people start near you: do you know whose side you're on?
Rung six is called contact switched off. What harm does silence do?
The harm has an address. A Nine on rung six isn't merely quiet; they cut the line to a particular person who is waiting for an answer, and that person is left alone in the middle of a conversation. For the Nine themselves, being left without a connection is the heaviest thing there is, and on rung six they do it to others. Every type's rung six works this way; a Nine's instrument for it is quiet.
