Enneagram test: why you keep doing the same thing

It won't tell you how good you are. It'll show you where your attention goes when you aren't directing it: why some conversations drain you and others don't, where the same irritation keeps coming from year after year, and what happens to you when things get hard. The answer is about a mechanism, not a label, and you can check it on yourself right away.

All nine are measured equally: every screen carries one question per type.

Four numbers from one set of answers

The type number is only a quarter of the answer

An Enneagram test usually ends with a number from 1 to 9. The same 108 answers here also produce three more results, and without them the number explains very little: two people of the same type can be unlike each other in almost everything.

  • Type

How your attention is built: where it goes on its own, without you deciding, and which question you're solving all the time without noticing. This isn't a set of qualities or a list of strengths.

  • Wing

A shade from one of your two neighbors on the circle, written with a w. With the same core type, 4w3 and 4w5 behave differently, and you'll see it in behavior before you see it in motive.

  • Instinctual subtype

Where most of your energy goes: to keeping yourself provided for, to your standing among people, or to one close bond. The subtype is the usual reason someone doesn't recognize themselves in the description of their own type.

  • Levels of development

Which range you were answering from. It's a state, not a grade: it changes over a lifetime, sometimes over a day. There are three ranges, and we don't show a step number.

with room to spare · with neither ahead · in the grip

There's no separate block of questions for the wing or the subtype. All four results are counted from one matrix of answers, so the test doesn't get four times longer.

Nine characters

Enneagram types: which of the nine is closest to you

None of the nine describes you completely, and that's how it should be: most people recognize themselves strongly in one and a little in the two next to it. Start with whichever one you stopped on.

Nine points, three centers, two lines

How the Enneagram is put together

This isn't a list of nine descriptions, it's a figure with connections. A number sits where it sits for a reason: every point has two neighbors, its own triad and two lines that pull it off course. Three layers, turn them on one at a time.

Three layers of one figure

Body, heart, head

The nine types fall into three groups by what a person meets the world with first. Body, 8, 9 and 1, pushes back and acts. Heart, 2, 3 and 4, holds an image and its relationships. Head, 5, 6 and 7, calculates and hedges. Color across the whole site follows the center rather than the number, so you see the group before you read the caption.

108 questions, one per screen

What taking it is like

Twenty minutes is a long time and we're not going to pretend otherwise. In exchange you answer statements about yourself rather than trick questions, and you can leave and come back whenever you like.

One question per screen
No wall of nine questions and no scrolling on a phone. Answering moves you on by itself, and the keys 1 to 5 work.
Saved on every answer
Progress goes to the server after every press, not after every screen. Close the tab, come back, carry on from the same question.
No sign-up
No email, no password. Your result lives at its own link, and you can open that link from another device.
There are no right answers
Answer about who you are now, not who you'd like to be. The questions are written so you can't tell which scale you're feeding.

What's in the free result

  • Your type with its name and the mechanism behind it, not a set of compliments
  • Your wing and what it changes in how you behave
  • Your instinctual subtype, or two candidates if it didn't separate
  • The range you were answering from, without a step number
  • A permanent link to your result and a separate page for showing it to other people

Paid report

You can order a detailed report on your own numbers separately: it gets written for your combination of type, wing and subtype rather than for one type out of nine. The offer shows up on the result screen, and there's nothing to buy before the test.

Limits

What this test doesn't do

Three things that usually go in small print or go unsaid. We say them before the test, not after.

  1. 01

    It isn't for selection

Not for hiring, not for appraisals, not for handing out roles. The result is counted from self-report, which is to say from what a person said about themselves on one particular day, and turning that into grounds for somebody else's decision isn't fair to them.

  2. 02

    It doesn't promise recognition

Sometimes the description lands right away and sometimes it doesn't. The second doesn't mean the count is wrong, and it doesn't mean you're an exception to the model.

  3. 03

Repeatable isn't the same as accurate

The test agrees with itself, and that much we know. What we don't have yet is a check on real people: we have a calculation on a model, and by it roughly one named type in sixteen turns out to be the wrong one. The calculation gets replaced by a measurement once enough people have taken the test twice.
