Enneagram Centers of Intelligence: how to tell your own

Everything on this site comes in three colors: the types, the wings, the figure itself. You want to know what these three groups are and whether the one your result shows is really yours. There is no breakdown of any single center here, each has its own page, and there are no nine types. This page is what any triad shares: three ways of meeting the world, three emotions, how a triad is built, and what the center means in your result.

Three centers, three emotions

Anger

Heart Center

Shamesome schools: sadness

Head Center

Support and safety

Fear

The three centers are three ways of meeting the world first: with the body, with feeling, or with thought. Each has its own theme. The body center is about boundaries: where I end and the pressure from outside begins. The heart center is about self-image and worth: how I am seen and whether that image is worth holding up. The head center is about support and safety: what to rely on and how not to be left without a bearing. One event reads as three: an intrusion, a judgement, a threat.

Each center has one emotion it fails to handle by default: anger for the body, shame for the heart, fear for the head. This is not a dominant trait and not what shows from outside: many body-center people rarely let anger out, and head-center people often hide fear behind confidence. The emotion of a center is what its defenses are built around, and it shows in what the center avoids. On the heart the schools disagree: Riso and Hudson say shame, several other authors say sadness. This site keeps the first.

The triads sit side by side on the circle: Eight, Nine, and One make the body center, Two, Three, and Four the heart center, Five, Six, and Seven the head center. This is not a memory aid: Oscar Ichazo laid the three centers on the figure so that each triad takes its own arc, with one corner of the inner triangle in the middle of each arc. Nine, Three, and Six are the cores of their triads, and the main property of a triad is tied to them.

02

How a triad is built

AngerOne emotion, three ways of handling it

  • 8Excess: anger comes out
  • 1Shortage: anger under control
  • 9Lost contact: anger not admitted

Within a triad, one emotion is handled in three ways, and this is the structure of the model, not an observation about people. One type releases the emotion in excess, one underdelivers it and keeps it under control, and the type in the middle of the triad loses contact with it and lives as if it were not there. Riso and Hudson call this overuse, underuse, and blocking. The three types of one triad differ not in which emotion they have but in what they do with it.

It shows most cleanly in the body triad, and this is the only example on the page. The Eight lets anger out: into the voice, the movement, the push, and is not embarrassed by it. The One keeps anger under control: it turns into demands on oneself and irritation at what is wrong, while the One does not admit to anger at all. The Nine denies anger: so far out of contact with it that it seems the calmest of the nine, and others notice its anger before it does.

What follows is what confuses people most often: three types of one triad can look nothing alike, because they do opposite things with the same emotion. The forceful and the placid, the demanding and the yielding stand in one center. That is why a center cannot be guessed from temperament and is settled by the theme behind the behavior: boundary, image, or support. The heart and head triads are built the same way, look different, and are laid out on their own pages.

03

How to tell your center

  1. The body is already acting or bracing
  2. Feeling rises before words
  3. Thought steps back and weighs options
The middles of the triads get the center wrong most often

Look at the first reaction, not at character. Character is built on top of the center and can look like anything. The first second of an unexpected problem is simpler: the body is already moving or bracing, feeling rises before words, or thought steps back and runs through options. Whichever comes first is the center. Pace and sociability are noise here.

Two questions about the last month, not about your idea of yourself. First: when a plan collapses, what happens in the first second, are you already acting, does a feeling take over, or do you step back and calculate. Second: what is hardest for you to bear, being pushed over, not being seen as you are, or being left without support. If the answers split, the first one carries the weight: it is about reaction, not values.

Two known mix-ups. The type in the middle of a triad resembles its emotion least, because it has lost contact with it, and gets the center wrong most often: the calm Nine looks for itself among the head types, the Six with its need for approval among the heart types, the Three replaces feeling with doing. If the result shows the middle of a triad and the description of the center feels foreign, that is a property of the middle, not an error.

04

The center in your result

The center is not scored: it follows from the type

Two candidates from different triads: the center first

One triad: the center fork does not help

The test does not score the center as a separate value. The center follows from the type: it is set by which triad the type belongs to, and in the result it shows through color and position on the figure, not through a number. There is no separate scale for the center in the questionnaire: the center is a grouping in the model, not a property of a person that could be measured apart from the type.

Why know the center, then. When the test shows two candidates from different triads, the center is the first fork worth settling, and it is easier than a choice between types: it is about the first reaction, not about character. If both candidates sit in the same triad, this fork does not help, and the choice comes down to what each does with the shared emotion.

Questions

Can I be in two centers at once?

No. The center is set by the type, and there is one type. Feeling like both a body and a head person means something else: the type uses all three ways, but one switches on first, and the same one fails most often. A wing and the lines can add traits of a neighbouring triad, but the center does not change. Doubt about the center is doubt about the type, and it is settled by the first reaction.

Why is the Nine in the body center if it is so calm?

Because the center is set by the emotion the type fails to handle, not by how much of it shows. The Nine stands in the middle of the body triad and denies anger more than its two neighbours: it is neither let out nor kept under control, it is simply not admitted. Calm is a way of handling anger, not its absence: a Nine does not answer pressure for a long time and then suddenly digs in.

Are centers and triads the same thing?

The word triad is wider. The centers are one grouping of the nine types into threes, the oldest and best known, by what a person meets the world with first. There are other triads: by the way of responding to difficulty, by where a person moves in relationships, and they have their own pages. When people say the three triads without qualifying it, they almost always mean the centers.

Why shame for the heart center, and not sadness?

The schools genuinely disagree here. Riso and Hudson name shame, Daniels and Chestnut sadness or grief, and some authors speak of the theme of image rather than an emotion. This site follows Riso and Hudson, because the test is built on their ladder of levels; the word is chosen for consistency, not as a verdict. Behind it stands the same thing: your own worth, settled through the response of others.

How do I tell my center if my type is not settled yet?

By the first reaction, not by type descriptions. Recall the last unexpected problem and its first second: the body was already acting, a feeling rose, or thought stepped back to weigh options. That is the fork into three groups, simpler than a choice of nine. Then, within the triad, look not at temperament but at what a type does with the emotion: lets it out, holds it, or does not notice it.
