Levels of development, type 1

Type 1 Levels of Development: when fixing becomes duty

Your result gives a range and stops there: three of the nine steps sit inside it, and the range does not say which one is yours or which way you are moving. This page is the whole ladder of a One, top to bottom, with the two lines where what changes is not how strong the fixing is but who it is aimed at. On all nine steps you stay a One. What changes is what you do with the fix.

01

The nine levels

  1. Level 1

    Reality left as it is

The fix is set down, and not for lack of things to fix. A One on this step sees the flaw as clearly as ever and leaves it be: the world owes them no compliance, and they owe it no repair. From outside it shows in something rare for this type: they change their mind in the middle of an argument and say so out loud.

  2. Level 2

    The fix kept at home

The fix comes back, aimed at what is theirs. A One keeps order in the work they answer for and does not annex the neighbor's: a colleague's error stays the colleague's. The sign is plain: work goes out on the day it is due, not on the day it is finally flawless, and once it is out they do not reopen it.

  3. Level 3

    Teaching by example

The rule starts to travel, and it travels by conduct rather than by remark. A One here shows how a thing is done by doing it, and explains only when asked. The outward sign: people bring them a dispute to settle, and both sides accept the ruling, because it is about the matter and not about either of them.

  4. Level 4

    A duty to fix everything

The fix turns into an obligation, and that is the first turn downward: what used to be done by choice now cannot be left undone. A One feels answerable for everything done wrong within their sight, other people's work included. The sign: in a shared job their share grows without a word, as they take back and redo whatever was not done right.

  5. Level 5

    A lesson for everyone

The fix stretches to cover everybody in reach, and a One takes the role of the one who explains. How a thing ought to be done gets said before anybody asks, in the voice of somebody who knows rather than suggests. Their own life runs by method. The sign: a day off has an hourly plan, and a departure from the plan spoils the day.

  6. Level 6

    Score kept on others

The fix moves from the work to the person. A One now points out other people's defects, which is to say does to them exactly what they most dread for themselves, and calls it honesty. The outward sign: the remark is no longer about the work but about whoever did it, not 'there is a mistake here' but 'that is all anyone could expect of him'.

  7. Level 7

    One truth for all

The rule stops being open to discussion. Past the line out of the middle range, a One holds it all the tighter the plainer it is that it fails, and any other view gets filed as corruption. The fix now lands on disagreement rather than on error. The sign: after a quarrel there is no making up, the person is struck off, and the circle shrinks year by year.

  8. Level 8

The flaw that fills the view

The fix contracts to a single point. A One cannot look away from one flaw, their own or somebody else's, and everything else stops existing. The rule meanwhile tightens on others exactly where they themselves no longer keep it. The sign: order on the surface grows as the rest gives way, shelves squared up while the bills go unpaid.

  9. Level 9

    Punishing instead of fixing

The fix is withdrawn and punishment takes its place. A One no longer corrects an error, they penalize it, and treat the one who made it as a person past repair. They do not exempt themselves. The sign: sleep, food, and rest are taken away from themselves as from a guilty party, and any easing reads as one more offense.

02

How the descent begins

  1. with room to spareThe core is given freely
First border: what was free becomes required
  2. with neither aheadThe core is demanded from others
Second border: the fear comes true
  3. in the gripThe core is defended, destructively

The line between the third and the fourth step runs through one word: must. Before it, a One fixes what they choose to and can leave the rest; past it, the fix is an obligation, because otherwise nobody will do it. What stops being free is the choice to let a wrong thing stand. The first step across looks innocent: they take on something nobody asked for, bring it up to standard, and wait for the others to notice. Nobody does, and the demand appears: other people are now required to want the same fix, and not wanting it reads as carelessness. The fix is no longer offered but collected.

The line between the sixth and the seventh step is where the fear of a One comes true. They have dreaded that their rule might be wrong, and on the sixth step, pointing out other people's defects, they break it with their own hands: in its name they do to people what they hold inadmissible. Somebody says so, or it shows in people leaving. Past the line, a One does not revise the rule; they dismiss the witness. What this range loses for good is one thing: the fix stops applying to the One and faces outward only.

03

What brings you back up

  1. with room to spare
Second return: not the same as feeling better
  2. with neither ahead
First return: an action possible only from this side of the border
  3. in the grip

A One comes back from the lower range into the middle by one action that is only available from down there: applying the fix to the rule. In the middle the rule looks like it works. At the bottom they hold proof that it has broken a real piece of work or a real person, and the proof can be accepted. Accepting it means saying, in one specific case, that the rule was wrong and the people were not. The first admission of that kind is the crossing: the fix looks inward again, and the demand on others loses its footing.

Coming back into the upper range is a different thing from things getting easier. Easier is when the remarks are fewer and the tone is softer while the rule is the same and still compulsory. The upper range begins where the fix becomes optional again: a One sees a wrong thing, can put it right, can leave it, and the thing left alone does not keep pulling at them. It is tested on somebody else's mistake that they noticed, left untouched, and a week later cannot recall.

04

Where you are now

  1. Freely, or because you have to

  2. Has the fear come true

  3. Where you return after a good week and after a bad one

The result shows a band, not a level

Take the last fix you made to something that was not yours: a text, a plan, a room somebody else had arranged. Could you have not made it? Not held back with effort, but calmly left it and not thought of it again. If you could have, and simply chose otherwise, the fix is still yours to give. If the thing left alone would have pulled at you until it was done, the fix is already being demanded, and that is the middle of the ladder. The second question is harder, because you usually know the answer already. Has there been a place in the last year where your rule turned out to be wrong, where somebody left because of it or a piece of work fell apart, and you saw it? What did you do with that: revise the rule, or decide that the one who could not take it was at fault? The first answer keeps you with neither ahead; the second means the line into the grip is already behind you. And the question of where you settle. After a good week, where do you go back to, fixing by choice or fixing by duty? After a bad week, where? The step you return to in both cases is yours, not the one you are standing on today.

Questions

How long does it take to climb one step?

Two answers, both honest. The step of the day changes in a day: one conversation, one blow-up, one job well finished moves a One a step up or down, and by evening they are not where they were in the morning. The step they keep returning to changes over years, and it moves not by effort but by the count of times the rule was revised instead of imposed.

Can a One in the grip turn into another type?

No. On the ninth step a One is still a One: they still split the world into right and wrong, only fixing has given way to punishing. The traits of other types that show up down there are traits, not a change of type, and every type has its own ladder because on the same step a One and a Four do different things with what sits at their core.

Does a One at the top of the ladder stop noticing mistakes?

No. The eyesight stays the same; what changes is what gets done with it. On the upper steps a One spots the gap as fast as on the lower ones and then has a choice: fix it, mention it, leave it. The choice is the whole difference. Lower down there is no choice: what has been seen demands an action, and the action lands on the person more and more often instead of on the work.

The sixth step looks like ordinary high standards. How do I tell them apart?

By who the remark is aimed at. High standards talk about the work: this is wrong, this needs redoing. The sixth step talks about the person: something is wrong with them if they let this through. That is the very thing a One most dreads hearing about themselves, and on the sixth step they say it to other people. If your remarks have been about people more and more often lately, the line is close.

Can a One stand on different steps at home and at work?

Yes, and it is common. At work the fix often stays a gift, because there is a deadline and a result to hand over; at home it turns into a duty, because there is nobody to accept the work as done. The ladder is one, the load is not, and where a One settles is counted by where they return most often, not by the better of the two places.
