Enneagram sp4: what the tenacity is made of

The code in front of you reads sp4, tenacity, and maybe a second Four code sits beside it, since instincts can come out close. The word alone settles little; anybody can be tenacious. This page starts from the everyday things an sp4 guards and moves on to what envy does with them. With two codes on the table, the name won't decide it; where your energy goes will.

  1. leading
  2. second
  3. neglected

The code does not say which of the other two is second and which is neglected

What this instinct guards

  • spI cover my own needs first
  • soI read where I stand with people
  • sxI go all in on one person

A guitar a relative bought them new can sit untouched in its case while the battered one they refretted themselves gets played every night. For a Four, self-preservation guards what carries the mark of their own work: anything ready-made is the same for everyone, so there's nothing in it to recognize themselves by, and effort leaves a mark that tells a thing apart from every other.

The books for their small business live in a spreadsheet only their accountant understands, and the accountant announces she's retiring. Nothing is wrong yet, but the sp4 has already ordered a used bookkeeping textbook and asked to sit in on the final quarterly close. What frightens them is that something vital depends on somebody else's hands, and those hands are leaving.

The kitchen table wobbles past saving in a month when money is thin. Instead of a cheap flat-pack replacement, what remains of the paycheck buys a used circular saw and a few boards from the lumberyard: short on means, the sp4 puts them where a thing can be made rather than bought. The new table comes out heavier and less even than the store one, and it's the only table in the house that feels like theirs.

How it colors the passion

  • The type's passion goes outward through the instinct
  • Countertype: the passion turns back against itself

Envy in a Four watches what came to other people without effort, and self-preservation turns its gaze to the ground underfoot: whose footing is firmer, and where it came from. The neighbors inherited a house with good bones; the sp4 bought the fixer-upper across the street. Envy stops being a feeling and becomes a gap between two houses that can be measured in sagging joists.

Tenacity is what that kind of footing demands. A house that was handed down pretty much holds itself up. One rebuilt by hand has to be held up: the caulk cracks every winter and the gutters clog every fall. The sp4's tenacity is upkeep on a foundation that didn't come with the family, and the bill keeps arriving as long as the foundation stands.

Envy would like the gap seen and called unfair, but self-preservation won't stand on other people's sympathy, which can't be stored or inspected. So a plan goes up on the fridge, and on a March Saturday, while the neighbors sit on the porch that came with the deed, the sp4 is on a ladder with a pry bar, pulling down old plaster. Each weekend is a surcharge on what the neighbors got for free, and the surcharges record the envy more fully than words would.

How it differs from the other two

so4, shame

Either one can name, unprompted, what the person across the table has that they don't, down to the watch brand and who paid for the vacation. An old classmate posts about a book deal. The so4 spends the evening on standing: who liked the post, what the old crowd will make of it, where they now rank in it. The sp4 spends it at the desk on the chapter they've been putting off. When someone turns out to have what you lack, do you sit down to earn it yourself, or think about how you now look among your people?

sx4, competition

Neither of them can do anything halfway: both put more into a thing than it asks for, from a kitchen remodel to a friendship, and from a distance that excess looks identical. A new hire gets praised at the team meeting for work the Four could have done. The sx4 aims at people, the new hire to outdo and the manager to win over. The sp4 goes back to their own project and makes it undeniable, and nobody in the room ever learns there was envy in it. When someone gets ahead of you, do your thoughts go to that person, or to your own work, which they may never hear about?

Place in the stacking, and the neglected one

  1. sp/so/sx
    1. sp
    2. so
    3. sx
  2. sp/sx/so
    1. sp
    2. sx
    3. so

With this leading instinct, two stackings are possible

With self-preservation leading, the choice makes itself. At a conference dinner there are people worth meeting at the next table and a colleague they're drawn to suggesting a drink afterward, and the sp4's first move is to check the last train home, because there's work in the morning. By the time the bar fills up, they're on the train, and the drink never happened.

The sp4 is sure titles don't matter to them and doesn't hear the edge in their voice when they talk about people who got ahead on connections, like the boss's nephew. Coworkers hear it and judge them for it, when all that happened was a comparison nobody was watching. That is the stacking with social neglected: envy of other people's standing goes unsupervised.

In the other stacking, social second and sexual neglected, what goes unsupervised is envy of other people's fire. A friend moves across the country for a new love, and the sp4 calls it a reckless waste of energy, then asks about it for weeks, every detail, without noticing the hunger in the questions.

What the test shows

  1. Everything separated: subtype and the full stacking

  2. Second and neglected close: subtype without the stacking

  3. Leading and second close: two candidates

The test reports four things, and the instinct is the one we're least sure about. We'd rather tell you that than bury it. For about half the people who take it, the three instincts come out too close to call, and when that happens we show you the top two instead of picking one. An sp4 describes themselves in the language of comparison: who got what, who has what, who got ahead. For them it's talk about footing, about whose ground is firmer, but a person focused on their place among people sounds exactly the same, so the result may name so4 as the second candidate. Then both Four codes sit side by side on the result.

Questions

Why does a ready-made solution annoy me even when it's better than mine?

Quality probably isn't the issue. A ready-made solution carries none of your work, and taking it means owning something you can't recognize yourself in, however well it runs. For an sp4 the irritation is guarding ownership, not arguing with the facts. Sort out where the mark matters to you, in a craft or a home, and where someone else's fix is fine, then take it there without a fight.

Why does it sting when people call my success luck?

The word lucky erases the price, and for an sp4 the price is the proof that a result belongs to you. Whoever said it most likely meant a compliment and never thought about the cost. One plain fact is enough in reply: how many drafts it took, what you had to learn first. There's no need to argue further. The price doesn't shrink because somebody missed it.

I'm offered a team to manage, but I'd rather do the work. Is that fear?

Not necessarily. If what counts as yours is what your own hands made, managing moves your mark onto other people's work, and the ground can shift under you even with a bigger salary. Before answering, estimate how much hands-on work would be left in an ordinary week. If almost none, that's a reason to negotiate the shape of the role before you turn it down.

How can I tell whether I pick the hard way out of habit?

Try this: imagine the short way gives the same result, and the result is just as much yours. If the long way still pulls at you, the price is what's holding you. For an sp4 the overpayment records the lack but doesn't close it. Something bought at a steep price is no more yours than something done on time, and the energy it takes is real.
