Enneagram sp5: everything needed within reach

The same code, sp5, came up on your second run through the test a month after the first, so it is hard to blame on a tired evening. What stands behind it is shown below in scenes from the everyday life of a Five led by self-preservation rather than in general talk about the type. Two matching results still settle nothing: the code is yours if the scenes ring true, not just the name.

  1. leading
  2. second
  3. neglected

The code does not say which of the other two is second and which is neglected

What this instinct guards

  • spI cover my own needs first
  • soI read where I stand with people
  • sxI go all in on one person

Every three weeks he cuts his own hair at the bathroom mirror with clippers and three guards, and it comes out even, minus forty minutes in the chair of a talkative barber. What self-preservation guards first in a Five is anything that stands in for a visit or a service from somebody else. The reason: a Five saves attention, and a service gets paid for twice, in money and in forty minutes of a stranger's voice at close range.

One day the supermarket near home pulls out its self-checkout lanes, and now a cashier at the exit asks about the rewards card and whether he needs a bag. Losing a way to get what he needs in silence registers with a Five sooner than any price hike. He leaves the basket by the shelf, finds a store that still has self-checkout on his phone, and from that night on drives there, fifteen minutes farther.

Four days at an out-of-town training, the company doubling everyone up, a week to go until payday. Money he barely has goes to the upgrade for a single room, and nobody knows it: to his coworkers he simply rooms alone. In the evenings he skips the hotel bar and lies in the quiet with a book, and by morning he can field questions till lunch again.

02

How it colors the passion

  • The type's passion goes outward through the instinct
  • Countertype: the passion turns back against itself

His desk drawer is full of cables: chargers for phones sold long ago, adapters, three extension cords, something for every occasion. Avarice, which needs the reserve never to run dry, turns under self-preservation into keeping things just in case: storing what might be needed costs less than one day taking that need to other people. The drawer is less about cables than about never knocking on a neighbor's door at night.

On the train he takes a window seat, sets a thermos on the tray table, puts on headphones with nothing playing, and says nothing for four hours except thanks to the conductor. The man in the next seat figures he is listening to music and doesn't start a conversation, which was the whole idea: the castle travels with him.

A broken main shuts off the building's water for a day. Under his bed are six jugs of water, and through the door he hears the neighbors in the hall asking one another who has any. He doesn't go out. When someone knocks on his own door, he opens it on the chain, hands over two jugs and closes it without asking how they are managing. He gave the water without counting, and he never once stepped into the hall.

How it differs from the other two

  • This page
  • Countertype

so5, totem

Both Fives bring a book to every party. When the old professor down the hall dies, his library ends up in the lobby with a note: "Free, take what you like." so5 carries off the first editions people in his field know by title, and by evening the forum is arguing over who gets to borrow them. sp5 carries off the handbooks, first aid, home wiring, canning, and the shelf they stood on too, since with those he won't need an electrician or a doctor for small things. From a stack like that, which book would you pick up first: the one that marks you as one of the people who know, or the one that keeps strangers out of your home?

sx5, trust

Countertype

At a big table, sp5 and sx5 both sit at the end and leave without saying goodbye to everyone. After a month of waiting, the test results come back clean. sx5 calls one person and talks until three in the morning about everything that month made unsayable. sp5 tells no one: cooks himself a real dinner, turns off his phone and sleeps twelve hours, taking back what the month used up. Who gets the relief first when a big fear lets go: one person you can tell everything, or you yourself, in a quiet where strength comes back on its own?

Place in the stacking, and the neglected one

  1. sp/so/sx
    1. sp
    2. so
    3. sx
  2. sp/sx/so
    1. sp
    2. sx
    3. so

With this leading instinct, two stackings are possible

Friends bring a puppy in a box: their dog had eight, and this one was saved for him. The no is ready before the box touches the floor: walks at seven and at ten, strangers at the dog park, someone to take her when he travels. Days nobody will chop into pieces come first, and the price is the one creature that would drag him out among people twice a day.

In his college group chat his last message is three years old, though he reads every word and feels caught up. The dinner for an old roommate's fortieth gets planned without him: they assume he left the chat ages ago. This is neglected social in a Five: avarice nobody watches has quietly crossed him off the list, and he is sure he never left.

His girlfriend comes home from two weeks away. The apartment is clean, her favorite cheese is in the fridge, he is glad, asks about the flight and within the hour goes off to read. She unpacks alone and talks to her sister until late. Sexual is the neglected one here: avarice hands her the same measured share of attention everyone gets, and he misses that she was waiting for more.

05

What the test shows

  1. Everything separated: subtype and the full stacking

  2. Second and neglected close: subtype without the stacking

  3. Leading and second close: two candidates

The test reports four things, and the instinct is the one we're least sure about. We'd rather tell you that than bury it. For about half the people who take it, the three instincts come out too close to call, and when that happens we show you the top two instead of picking one. The social instinct may be heard in sp5 answers wherever they describe handling what other people expect. A Five led by self-preservation keeps close track of who expects what, what is owed to whom and how to say no without giving offense, and on a self-report that can sound like concern for standing among people. The result may then put so higher than it really sits, or show sp and so as two candidates.

Questions

Why do unannounced phone calls bother me more than texts?

A call asks for presence right now, while a text can wait until there is energy for it and get a measured reply. For a Five led by self-preservation, a surprise call probably feels like a withdrawal from the reserve made without asking. An agreement with the people close to you can help: calls for what is urgent, messages for the rest, and then the phone stops making you flinch.

Why is staying overnight at friends' so hard, even at good friends'?

Most likely because a house that isn't yours has nowhere to recharge: no corner of your own, no way to step into quiet when the talk runs long. A Five with this instinct can love the hosts and still count the hours until morning. If that fits, a room nearby or heading home before bedtime may be kinder than a sleepless night and a worn-out breakfast.

Why do my unused vacation days keep piling up?

Those days seem to work as a reserve: while they sit there, there is something to fall back on if the energy ever runs out completely. For sp5, a day off taken early can feel like spending exactly what may soon be needed. Try taking one day before you are running on fumes rather than after, and see how much it gives back.

My friends think I'm lonely, but I like being alone. Who's right?

Both of you could be. For a Five led by self-preservation, time alone is when strength returns, and from outside it is easy to mistake for sadness. One way to check: after a weekend by yourself, do you come back to people with more energy than you left with, or the same? If nothing was added, the quiet has stopped working, and your friends may have a point.
