Enneagram sp7: freedom paid for in advance

The other tab still has the Memorial Day flights open, and this one shows sp7 with the word family next to it. People like to draw the Seven halfway out the door, and here it turns out to be a subtype about reserves and one's own people. What follows tests that on tickets, memberships and the people brought along. The other two Seven codes are still in play: whether this one fits depends on finding yourself in the scenes, not the label.

  1. leading
  2. second
  3. neglected

The code does not say which of the other two is second and which is neglected

What this instinct guards

  • spI cover my own needs first
  • soI read where I stand with people
  • sxI go all in on one person

The paper calendar on sp7's fridge door is filled in through October, and nearly every month already has something paid for: a concert in March, a lake cabin for Memorial Day, a pasta class in June. In a Seven, self-preservation guards the way out of any given day and makes it something to hold in the hand: a date, a booking, a receipt. As long as a paid-for good thing sits ahead, a bad day today is not a dead end, only the stretch before the next square.

After ear surgery the doctor rules out flying until spring, and the October square with Lisbon in it goes blank. She can't stand a blank square past dinner: the tickets are refunded, the money is back, and in their place are a sleeper car to New Orleans, a jazz brunch and a cooking class in the French Quarter. The fridge shows no empty month again.

The winter after the layoff, every dollar is counted. The day the unemployment deposit lands, the first thing she does is buy two tickets to an April matinee, the cheapest ones, up in the balcony, and pin them to the fridge with a magnet. The rest gets sorted afterward, and it sorts more easily: the winter has an end now.

02

How it colors the passion

  • The type's passion goes outward through the instinct
  • Countertype: the passion turns back against itself

For Friday sp7 holds two tickets, one for a jazz club and one for a comedy show across town, and she'll choose at six, depending on her mood. One ticket will go to waste, and she pays for that without a wince. Greed for experience, which one evening can't satisfy, becomes a habit of buying options once self-preservation leads: the second ticket pays for the right not to decide ahead of time.

A week before the group camping trip to the lake, the neighbor's minivan dies. By evening sp7 has re-seated nine people into two cars, the neighbor's dog rides on her lap, and the neighbor's tent goes on her roof rack. Nobody has to stay home. In this Seven the family travels whole, and a good time that left one of her own behind already has a flaw in it.

The owner of the Sonoma guesthouse is still pouring on the final night, and sp7 has already booked the same rooms with him for next September and is collecting deposits over Venmo right there at the table. The party isn't over, and for her it has already been extended by a year. Good things don't end for this Seven. They get moved to a date.

How it differs from the other two

  • Countertype

so7, sacrifice

Countertype

A broken ankle or a canceled flight, both of them tell it starting from the point where it gets funny. A beach house on the Outer Banks is rented by nine people, and it has one bedroom with a balcony over the water. Before anyone arrives, sp7 posts in the group chat that the balcony room is hers and her sister's, since she made the booking, and drinks her coffee out there every morning. so7 gives up her own room to a couple with a toddler, sleeps on the pullout, and has bagels on the table for everyone by eight. Which vacation do you remember more warmly afterward: the one where the best part went to you, or the one where you gave it away?

sx7, fascination

In a new city, by the end of the first day both know where the best coffee is and where to watch the sunset. In Costa Rica both stand up on a surfboard for the first time. Back home sp7 buys a used board and a season pass to the surf park outside town, and now she has Saturdays on the water until fall. sx7 changes the return flight, stays three more weeks until she catches her wave, and then falls asleep to ocean videos for a month. After a trip like that, what do you need more: Saturdays on the water through the season, or three more weeks there until it lets go of you?

Place in the stacking, and the neglected one

  1. sp/so/sx
    1. sp
    2. so
    3. sx
  2. sp/sx/so
    1. sp
    2. sx
    3. so

With this leading instinct, two stackings are possible

A friend she has long been in love with moves to Buenos Aires for a year and asks her to come. sp7 flies down for two weeks on a round-trip ticket and keeps her apartment. Twelve months on he has a different life there, and she has an album from those two weeks that she opens more often than she'd like. A leading self-preservation doesn't argue with being in love; it just buys the ticket both ways.

Her husband's birthday is scheduled by the hour: brunch at a new place, a spa, a concert, dinner with his friends. At eleven at night, in the cab, he says he'd have liked to spend the whole day lying around with her, talking. That's the neglected sexual instinct: greed for experience packed the day so full there was no room left in it for two.

The stacking with social neglected shows in her team's vacation calendar. She claims the best weeks first every January, always the same two: the Fourth of July and the week between Christmas and New Year's. Nobody objects out loud. One spring her July is already taken, and her manager explains they went in rotation this time and somehow never asked her.

What the test shows

  1. Everything separated: subtype and the full stacking

  2. Second and neglected close: subtype without the stacking

  3. Leading and second close: two candidates

The test reports four things, and the instinct is the one we're least sure about. We'd rather tell you that than bury it. For about half the people who take it, the three instincts come out too close to call, and when that happens we show you the top two instead of picking one. Answers from sp7 can carry the social instinct's accent. The most visible moves of this Seven get made together with people: group trips, split rentals, a crowd that has to be gathered and driven. Written into a self-report, that sounds like loving company and being good at pulling people together around a plan, which is the social subtype's language, though all that gathering serves one end: the good thing secured and her own people coming along whole. The leading instinct may then be named social, or two candidates may come up on the screen.

Questions

My partner says I turn vacations into a schedule. Why do I do that?

For this subtype a schedule probably is the vacation: a day where every good thing is paid for and in its place can't turn into a dead end. Your partner, meanwhile, has no air in that day. Try leaving one day of a trip unbooked, with nothing but the address where you'll wake up. If by lunch you don't feel uneasy, your reserve is sturdier than it seems.

Why do gift cards and memberships pile up that I never get around to using?

Each one was probably bought for the possibility rather than the activity: the pool, the hot-air balloon ride, the climbing lesson sit in a drawer as ways out you could take on any given day. That's also why they're hard to throw away. Pick one and give it a date this week, and hand the rest to people who will actually go.

Why is a week at home with a cold harder on me than the cold itself?

A cold cancels the body and the plans at once: the squares on the fridge go blank and there's nowhere to go. It's probably not the fever that wears on you but the feeling of being stuck. A small way out within the apartment helps: order soup from a favorite place, set Friday as the first trip outside, even if it's only to the coffee shop on the corner. A date ahead works even in bed.

Why am I hurt when one of my people drops out of a group trip?

Your own circle is likely part of the reserve here: the good thing was planned for everyone, and one person bowing out feels like a crack in a shared wall, not someone's right to a weekend. Hence a hurt that can surprise you too. Ask what's in the way before persuading: sometimes a person needs a night at home more than your plan, and the circle is no smaller for it.
