Enneagram so2: the one the whole circle calls
Two may well have been the number you expected. The letters so, with the word ambition beside them, probably were not: looking after people and aiming higher sit awkwardly on one line. The subject here is what a Two's pride turns into when it gets a whole circle instead of one person. The code may not be yours at all; a Two's instincts can sit close together, and then a second code shows up beside it.

- second
- neglected
The code does not say which of the other two is second and which is neglected

What this instinct guards
- spI cover my own needs first
- soI read where I stand with people
- sxI go all in on one person
On so2's street the front porch is the pickup point for the neighborhood's free-stuff group: a crib, a box of mason jars, a bag of outgrown cleats, each tagged with a neighbor's name in so2's handwriting. Nearly everyone on the street has stood on that porch at some point. That porch is so2's place among people, made visible. While bags keep coming and going, a whole street needs them: the kind of need a Two with the social instinct leading lives on.
In the spring a newcomer starts a second group with an app and pickup lockers at the library, and the porch goes quiet within a week. so2 is the first to welcome the app in the old group, offers to help moderate, and by summer the locker codes are texted out from so2's phone. The lockers still belong to the library; the route to them runs through so2 again.
In tax season so2 works until nine, runs on gas-station coffee, and has thirty minutes left each night. Those go to texting the neighbors who stopped posting: three lines each, a question about the new puppy or the bad knee. By Saturday two of them are back on the porch, picking up a lamp nobody really needed.

How it colors the passion
- The type's passion goes outward through the instinct
- Countertype: the passion turns back against itself
Pride in a Two, the kind that would rather give than ask, grows inside a circle into the position of the source: good things reach the street through so2. Casserole dishes in freezers all over the neighborhood carry so2's masking-tape label, Return to 14 Elm. Every dish comes back washed, with a thank-you note on top, and the street knows so2's address better than the mail carrier does.
Ambition shows in where so2 takes the help. At the hospital foundation's gala they volunteer for the coat check by the entrance, where every donor stops for a minute, rather than the kitchen. By midnight so2 has four board members' cell numbers, and the next spring the neighborhood's playground grant goes through on one of those numbers.
When a new mom starts organizing Teacher Appreciation Week, so2 doesn't compete; they help: a contact at the bakery, a sign-up sheet already built, a list of which teachers are gluten-free. By Friday the principal's thank-you email names so2, the new mom is listed among the volunteers, and she never organizes anything again. The help turned out bigger than her idea, and the idea became so2's.

How it differs from the other two

- Countertype
sp2, privilege
CountertypeStrangers in line at the pharmacy tell both of them about their divorces before the line has moved.
The flu knocks both of them flat the week a friend comes home with newborn twins. sp2 texts one line, pretty sure I'm dying over here, and by evening there's soup and ginger ale on the porch. so2, running a fever, builds the new mom a meal train for the whole month, texts the circle, and covers the empty days with delivery on their own card.
Flat on your back with a fever while someone in your circle has it worse, which call do you make first: to whoever will bring you soup, or to the friend with two newborns?
sx2, seduction
Both hug people they have met exactly once, and nobody seems to mind.
One summer both work as counselors at the same sleepaway camp. By the end of the first week so2 is the camp director's right hand, running the parents' updates, the bus schedule, and which cabin needs another adult. sx2 gives the whole summer to one prickly thirteen-year-old who spoke to nobody on day one and by August talks only to them, and cries at the bus.
By the last night of camp, which would feel like the reward: the whole camp leaning on you, or one kid who opened up to nobody else?

Place in the stacking, and the neglected one

With this leading instinct, two stackings are possible
When the PTA president and so2's oldest friend fall out over the fall fundraiser, the whole board has to pick a side. so2's reply sits first under the president's announcement, before the friend has even called, and so2 never says a word of regret about it. The friend leaves the PTA and, it turns out later, so2's life as well.
The son of a neighbor can't get a truck loan on his own, and so2 co-signs without reading past the first page: saying no to one of their own would mean admitting the giving has a limit. In the spring he stops paying, and the lender takes it out of so2's paycheck for three years. Self-preservation is the neglected instinct here, and a giver's pride can't see where its own reserve ends.
Social leading and sexual neglected: in that stacking, pride won't admit that one person is needed. so2's husband is offered a two-year posting in Denver, and so2 packs his bags, lines up friends of friends to meet him at the airport, and never once says they'll miss him. Two years later he renews: things at home, he says, run fine without him.

What the test shows
Everything separated: subtype and the full stacking
Second and neglected close: subtype without the stacking
Leading and second close: two candidates
The test reports four things, and the instinct is the one we're least sure about. We'd rather tell you that than bury it. For about half the people who take it, the three instincts come out too close to call, and when that happens we show you the top two instead of picking one. On a questionnaire, the social instinct of so2 can pass for the sexual one. Sensing what someone needs, getting close to people fast, drawing them in, giving them a lot of warmth: this subtype will agree to all of it, and that is the vocabulary of the instinct that lives in one close bond. so2 spreads the warmth across many people at once, and no answer says whether it went to one person or to forty. So sexual can climb right up to social, and then the result shows two codes, so2 and sx2.

Questions
Why does it sting when they manage fine without me?
When the circle manages without you, your place in it sat empty for a while, and for a Two led by the social instinct that registers before any pleasure at the others' success. The sting is about the gap where you always stand, not their competence. Worth asking what the circle got while you were away: sometimes it only means you built it well enough to take a Saturday off.
Why do I introduce people and then feel left out when they click?
An introduction you made counts, for a social Two, as part of your circle, and for a while the connection runs through you. When the two start meeting without you, nothing has been betrayed; the go-between's seat has simply disappeared, and a giver's pride notices that sharply. Count such pairs as good work: a circle where people lean on each other beats one where everybody leans on you.
How do I step back from something that ran through me for years?
Stepping back can feel like vanishing to a Two with the social instinct: the place in the circle was earned by the work, and without the work it seems there is no place. So hand it over rather than walk off: name a successor, pass on the contacts in front of everyone, come back once as a guest. People remember how someone left, and the guest's seat stays yours unless you give it up.
Why is asking for others easy and asking for myself impossible?
Asking on the circle's behalf keeps a Two in the giver's seat: the request comes from them, not toward them. Asking for yourself makes you one of the people who need something, and pride can't stand that. In a social Two the contrast is stark: they will call any office for a neighbor and sit on their own roof leak for a month. Start with something small and easy to return: a ride, not a rescue.
