Enneagram sx2: what a Two wants from seduction

Seduction is an awkward word to find beside your code, sx2, and harder still to read aloud to whoever is next to you on the couch: it lands as either a dig or a compliment, and misses both ways. What follows shows what the word covers in a Two whose energy goes into one bond, minus the wink. If the test put two instincts nearly level, this is one of two pages, and the one to trust is where you recognize what you do rather than what you say.

  1. leading
  2. second
  3. neglected

The code does not say which of the other two is second and which is neglected

What this instinct guards

  • spI cover my own needs first
  • soI read where I stand with people
  • sxI go all in on one person

Around this sx2 the evidence sits in someone else's habits: his wife takes her coffee with cardamom because that is how he made it the second morning, and her car playlist is full of an Ohio band she had never heard of before him. What a Two guards under the sexual instinct is exactly this: one person's pleasures that trace back to them. Anybody can be useful. Only one person gets to be the source of what someone loves, and the proof sits in a mug every morning.

A friend of hers comes back from Portland with a bag of beans from some cult roaster, and for a week breakfast is all about the friend and her roaster. He doesn't argue and doesn't ask. On Saturday he drives his wife across town to a tiny Ethiopian place where the owner roasts beans in a pan right at the table and wafts the smoke toward them, and by Sunday he has her roasting at home. The Portland bag stays in the cupboard, sealed.

March is brutal: night shifts at the distribution center, weekends at his mother's getting the house ready to sell, five hours of sleep on a good day. Out of those he gives up thirty minutes every morning. Home at six, he grinds cardamom and sets the pot on the stove so she wakes to the smell, and only then drops onto the couch with his sweatshirt still on.

How it colors the passion

  • The type's passion goes outward through the instinct
  • Countertype: the passion turns back against itself

Pride, which cannot stand asking, finds itself a job in the sexual instinct: proving there is a way to anyone. A month into a Thursday pottery class, the sx2 remembers exactly one of the eight people at the wheels, the woman who met his joke about centering clay with a raised eyebrow. Everyone else is easy, so they don't count. A cool look is not an insult to him but an assignment for next Thursday.

Seduction, in this Two, is the knack of getting the other person to take the step. On their third date he mentions that the art-house theater ends its Kurosawa series Sunday and that he will probably go alone. Saturday, near midnight, a text arrives: "Could I come with you?" He never had to ask; his own wish came back to him as her invitation.

When the woman he has been seeing says she needs time on her own, he answers lightly: of course, makes sense. He carries her bag down to the Uber. That evening his profile photo shows him sunburned and laughing on a sailboat, and for nine days the phone stays face down. His evening run passes her building, and he never stops at the buzzer: "come back" would be a request, and he has no words for those.

How it differs from the other two

  • This page
  • Countertype

sp2, privilege

Countertype

Talking to someone, each of them reaches out and touches: a palm on the forearm, a hug that lasts a beat longer than the moment calls for. A year in, each of them hears the same line from the woman he is with: "Being with you feels like home." For the sp2 nothing better could be said: the warmth is dependable now, and it is finally safe to settle in. The sx2 smiles, and a week later turns up with a new haircut and a plan for somewhere she has never been, because calm, to him, sounds like a fire that needs building again. Once closeness feels solid, where does the freed-up energy go for you: into getting comfortable inside it, or into making it hot again?

so2, ambition

Both show up at the door carrying something: a pie, a paperback, a bottle of homemade limoncello. Each of them moves into a new apartment building. A month in, the so2 has organized a spring cleanup of the courtyard, holds spare keys for three units, and has talked management into a new lock on the basement door. The sx2 knows one neighbor by name, the cellist on the fifth floor, and the two of them walk her dog around the block at night, talking until two. The building thanks the first one many times over; one person answers the second one completely. In a new place, do your free evenings go into getting the whole building to count on you, or into one person you can't bring yourself to say good night to?

Place in the stacking, and the neglected one

  1. sx/sp/so
    1. sx
    2. sp
    3. so
  2. sx/so/sp
    1. sx
    2. so
    3. sp

With this leading instinct, two stackings are possible

Saturday he has promised a buddy help with a move, and the woman he has been seeing for two months texts that she flies out Monday for six months. Ten minutes later he is driving her to the coast, and the buddy gets a "sorry, can't." The price turns up at the housewarming: everyone tells the story of the couch wedged in the stairwell, and he laughs a beat late.

Put self-preservation in the neglected slot and an sx2 gives himself away in the bathroom. At his girlfriend's place he swapped the dead bulb long ago, tightened the faucet, and hung the shelf; at home he has showered for a month with the door open and the hall light on. Pride fixes only what someone else will see, and his own bathroom never makes that list.

The other stacking with the same leading instinct leaves social neglected, and this Two cannot see how the group reads their charm. At a friend's wedding he dances all night with the bride's sister. By Monday the crowd has a story where he is a heartbreaker, and he only hears it when the friend asks him to leave "the charm" at home for the baby's first birthday.

What the test shows

  1. Everything separated: subtype and the full stacking

  2. Second and neglected close: subtype without the stacking

  3. Leading and second close: two candidates

The test reports four things, and the instinct is the one we're least sure about. We'd rather tell you that than bury it. For about half the people who take it, the three instincts come out too close to call, and when that happens we show you the top two instead of picking one. In the words of the answers, an sx2's love can sound like self-preservation. Someone who describes remembering a partner's favorite food, warming up the bed, and checking whether they slept enough is talking about bodies and comfort, while for a Two led by the sexual instinct all of it is a way to keep one bond charged. Answers like these can push self-preservation up, and then the result may name it as leading or offer two candidates instead of one.

Questions

How can I tell whether I love someone or just want to win them?

The check is simple and not much fun: look at what is left once there is nothing more to win. Another person's coolness sets a task for a Two led by the sexual instinct, and energy flows to it gladly. Should the description fit, test the interest on ordinary days: do you want to hear about their job, see them with a cold, bored and unremarkable? If you do, it has stopped being a chase.

Why do I get uneasy when my partner plans a surprise for me?

A surprise flips the roles. A Two whose leading instinct is sexual is used to taking the other person's breath away, and now their own breath is going, in front of witnesses. The unease is probably not ingratitude: for pride, receiving is harder than giving. Try sitting through one such evening without giving anything back, and watch their face while you are simply glad.

My partner says being with me is like a roller coaster. What do they mean?

Most likely the rhythm you keep the charge in: close, then a little farther off, then close again. The swing keeps a bond from going cold, often with no plan behind it. If the roller coaster sounds like you, ask which part is hardest for your partner, the pulling away or the coming back. The answer will show a cost of that charge you can't see from inside.

Why do I give everything for one boss and cool off when they leave?

Work, too, runs through one person when the sexual instinct leads a Two. If this subtype fits, the energy never went into the title or the department; it went into making that one manager light up at what you brought. The new boss is still a name in an email, and the fire has nothing to catch on. Find one person in the new setup to share the work with before you go cold entirely.
