Enneagram sp8: an appetite braced for a siege

Second time through the test, still an Eight, but the letters moved: last time sx8, this time sp8, survival. A score won't settle which code is yours; your own life will. For that check, what follows is where an Eight with self-preservation leading spends force when what's theirs has to stay in their own hands, and in which choices it parts ways with the two neighbors. Keep the first code handy for now.

  1. leading
  2. second
  3. neglected

The code does not say which of the other two is second and which is neglected

What this instinct guards

  • spI cover my own needs first
  • soI read where I stand with people
  • sxI go all in on one person

Cash is the thing. An sp8 keeps enough of it at home to last a good while, in a fireproof box in the closet with one key. Money in the bank never feels entirely theirs, since a bank can freeze it. Self-preservation tends body and household in anyone; in an Eight, whose fear is ending up in someone else's power, it tends the question of who holds the purse strings, and the box is the answer.

At the checkout of a home improvement store the card gets declined: a fraud alert, the account frozen until they call in. There's a line behind them. Of all losses this is the loudest one for an sp8, though not a dollar is gone. They don't wait on hold. They pay cash from the wallet, and by evening they've opened an account at a credit union and moved part of the money, so one hand never holds all of it again.

The brother-in-law gets an envelope right at a kid's birthday party: the loan repaid ahead of schedule, out of the first money in a month when contracts hardly came in. The rest of the month will be lean, and that barely registers with an sp8. For an Eight, owing means somebody has the right to bring it up, and that right is the first thing they buy back, before anything else gets a thought.

02

How it colors the passion

  • The type's passion goes outward through the instinct
  • Countertype: the passion turns back against itself

An sp8 buys beef by the side, straight from a farm, and cut and wrapped it fills a chest freezer in the basement. That is how an Eight's lust, for which nothing is ever quite enough, works under self-preservation: its measure moves off volume and arguments and onto food, heat and stock. Need has little to do with it. A full freezer feels like being fed in advance, and that feeling is worth more to them than any object money buys.

An ordinary week of work and dinners gets provisioned as if the stores would close tomorrow, the banks lock up and the neighbors stop answering the door, all in one night. They don't expect a disaster and don't talk about one. Hence survival: lust, bored by ordinary amounts, has found the one yardstick it measures stock by, getting through alone, with nobody's help, for as long as it takes.

At the lake cabin the sp8 ladles water on the sauna rocks while the others drift out one by one, and sits on the top bench until the heat is what they want, then a little past it. From there they walk straight into the October lake. Rest has no medium setting for them any more than stocking up does: the body gets everything at once, to the edge. At dinner afterward they eat more than anyone and sleep as if after a double shift.

How it differs from the other two

  • This page
  • Countertype

so8, solidarity

Countertype

A handshake with either of them holds like a contract, and nobody asks for paperwork afterward. When the kid is getting pushed around at school, the sp8 signs him up for wrestling, drives him to practice three nights a week, and teaches him to hold eye contact, so what stands up to the older boys is his own back rather than borrowed backup. The so8 finds the parents of the other kids it's happened to, and a week later they're in the principal's office together, one front. What would you rather have in a hard year: people who'll stand next to you, or so much of your own that nobody is needed?

sx8, possession

Hauling a couch up to a fifth-floor walk-up, both grab the heavy end, and neither will hear of hiring movers. A long-distance relationship reaches the question of who moves. The sx8 leaves the apartment and the job and goes to the person, as long as that person is near, whole, every day. The sp8 says come here: they won't leave a house where everything is theirs and within reach, and the partner moving in is a sign they are ready to live on the sp8's land. If love required a move, who would be packing the boxes?

Place in the stacking, and the neglected one

  1. sp/so/sx
    1. sp
    2. so
    3. sx
  2. sp/sx/so
    1. sp
    2. sx
    3. so

With this leading instinct, two stackings are possible

Before a minor operation the doctor offers general anesthesia, though local will do. The sp8 picks local on the spot and stares at the ceiling for forty minutes, hearing every instrument. For the leading instinct, a clear head and a body watched by its own eyes outrank calm, and they walk out paler than they had to.

With social as the neglected instinct, an sp8's lust can't see where theirs ends. Snow tires, sacks of concrete mix and a boat motor migrate into the shared hallway of the condo building. To them it's order, to the neighbors a land grab, discussed in a group chat they aren't in. They find out from a notice the management company tapes to their door.

After a date the sp8 remembers the ribeye, how it was cooked and the check, and only vaguely what the woman across the table said. That is the neglected sexual instinct at work: appetite eats all the attention. They notice her interest the week she stops showing it, and are honestly surprised there won't be a second dinner.

05

What the test shows

  1. Everything separated: subtype and the full stacking

  2. Second and neglected close: subtype without the stacking

  3. Leading and second close: two candidates

The test reports four things, and the instinct is the one we're least sure about. We'd rather tell you that than bury it. For about half the people who take it, the three instincts come out too close to call, and when that happens we show you the top two instead of picking one. When an sp8 answers about their household and their people, the social instinct can be heard: responsibility for others, taking their troubles on, no patience for anyone who goes after them. The test may read that as attention to one's place among people and put so8 forward, even first.

Questions

I'm impossible when I'm hungry. Is that the instinct?

Hunger may be more than discomfort for you. With self-preservation leading in an Eight, an empty stomach can register as a sign that what you need is out of your hands, and the response is the one you'd give to anyone's power over you: hard. The people around you can use a simple rule, food first and talk after. And it helps to keep something to eat on you and not let it get to the edge.

It makes me angry when people take my things without asking. Why?

The object hardly matters. A screwdriver or a charger taken without asking means someone disposed of what's yours, and for an Eight led by self-preservation that likely hits the same nerve a big loss would. It helps to say up front what in the house is shared and what isn't: then a hand on the shared stuff stops counting as an intrusion.

All-inclusive resorts drive me up the wall. What's going on?

There's plenty of everything, but somebody else runs it: when the restaurant opens, what's on tonight, how long the buffet line is. For an sp8, abundance that can't be taken into your own hands tends to tease more than it feeds. A road trip may suit you better, stopping where you decide and buying at farm stands instead of a buffet: then the table is yours.

Is it worth overpaying to own rather than rent?

Depends on what you're buying. Renting means someone else has a key to your door and the right to raise the price, and for an Eight with self-preservation leading that likely registers as a hand on what's yours, even with a decent landlord and numbers that favor renting. The premium on owning buys the certainty that nobody shows up with new terms. Worth deciding with that in mind.
