Enneagram sx8: who an Eight surrenders to
A second run through the test gave the same code, sx8, and the same word, "possession," which sounds like something said about a jealous partner. What follows is about what an Eight with this instinct guards, who gets to come close unarmed, and why the grip afterward is so tight. The instinct is the shakiest thing the test measures, so a second run doesn't make sx8 final, and a neighboring code may still be yours.

The code does not say which of the other two is second and which is neglected

What this instinct guards
- spI cover my own needs first
- soI read where I stand with people
- sxI go all in on one person
There is one person an sx8 will doze off next to mid-movie, and nobody else. That is what the instinct guards here: a connection where the guard can come down. An Eight spends a lifetime making sure nobody gets the upper hand, and that watchfulness costs energy; the sexual instinct gives it the one place where the hands can drop. So this person matters more than anything and is more dangerous than anyone: the only one who has seen the Eight unarmed.
At dinner she mentions, in passing, that Dave thinks they aren't ready to buy a house. This is the thing an sx8 never misses: some third person has acquired a say in what concerns her. The plates are still on the table when he asks for Dave's number, and that night he invites him out for a beer on Thursday, to talk face to face and see what kind of man he is.
With strength left for exactly one thing, an sx8 doesn't split it. The flu has him flat all week, and he gets out of bed once: on Saturday she defends her dissertation, and he sits in the back row with a thermos and a fever of a hundred and two, so that when she walks out of the room he is the first one beside her.

How it colors the passion
- The type's passion goes outward through the instinct
- Countertype: the passion turns back against itself
Within the first month he has read every book on her shelf, learned her high school friends by name and driven out to the town where she grew up. Lust, which needs life at full throttle, finds one person in an sx8, and the appetite moves onto them: their past, their town, their family. One person lasts a long time, because behind everyone stands a whole world, and an sx8 takes it in the way others climb a mountain.
At a dinner party he tops up her glass before she reaches for the bottle, moves her chair out of the draft and, when the host asks how the new job is going, answers for her. Possession here isn't rough or loud: her glass, her chill and her words have become his concern without anyone asking, and he would be honestly surprised to hear she could have answered herself.
For her fortieth he rents the old roller rink for a night, flies her sister in from Oregon after six years apart, and tracks down the band that played her parents' wedding. Dinner for two would have been plenty for her. For him it isn't enough: the excess he carries needs somewhere to go, and there is only one place it goes. Here lust is on full display, aimed not at things or at power but at one woman.

How it differs from the other two

- Countertype
sp8, survival
sp8 and sx8 take the seat facing the door in any diner, even for a five-minute coffee, and clock whoever walks in. Each sells an old truck for more than expected. That weekend sp8 orders metal roofing for the shed and puts the rest in reserve; the extra went into the homestead. sx8 books two tickets that evening to Lisbon, the city his person has talked about for years, and spends the whole sum on one trip. When a windfall and a free month land in your lap, where do they pull first: into shoring up what's yours, or onto one person?
so8, solidarity
CountertypeWhen so8 and sx8 hug someone, ribs creak, and they don't let go right away. Each has a milestone birthday, and each can mark it any way they like. so8 books the long table at the barbecue joint and invites everybody who belongs: cousins, old school friends, the neighbor downstairs, and each one gets a toast. sx8 takes one person up the coast for two days and turns the phone off; the texts get read a week later. When the celebration is yours and the choice is all yours, what do you want: all your people at one long table, or one person across from you with no witnesses?

With this leading instinct, two stackings are possible
They buy the house together, and he asks for only her name on the deed. His brother says nobody does that, the lawyer suggests a prenup, friends exchange looks. The signing takes ten minutes. The connection in which an Eight goes without armor costs the right to depend on no one, and the rainy-day cushion and the family's opinion go with it.
In his kitchen there are three bottles of good bourbon for a special occasion, a tin of caviar for her, and not one box of pasta. Lust left unminded cooks only feasts: an ordinary Tuesday doesn't exist for it, and on days with no occasion he eats crackers from the box for months without noticing. This is neglected self-preservation in an sx8.
Social is his neglected instinct, and it shows in empty chairs. An evening where nothing burns is empty to an sx8, so he skips his aunt's seventieth, a neighbor's retirement party, the funeral of an old friend's father. Each absence feels minor to him, while the circle counts them one by one, and three people turn up for his own fiftieth.

What the test shows
Everything separated: subtype and the full stacking
Second and neglected close: subtype without the stacking
Leading and second close: two candidates
The test reports four things, and the instinct is the one we're least sure about. We'd rather tell you that than bury it. For about half the people who take it, the three instincts come out too close to call, and when that happens we show you the top two instead of picking one. Possession can speak the language of self-preservation in self-report. Describing themselves, an sx8 reaches for words like mine, not giving it up, nobody touches it, and on a questionnaire those read as concern for property and reserves, though a person stands behind them. Self-preservation may then take first place, or the result may show sp and sx as two candidates.

Questions
Why can I only cry in front of one person?
For an Eight, tears are an open guard, and opening up happens only where no blow is coming. With the sexual instinct leading, there is one such place: a person the bond has been tested with for years. For someone sx8 fits, this is not shame but a way of saving strength: one unlocked door lets the rest stay bolted. It gets hard when that person is far away.
Why do I test the people closest to me?
The one an Eight is unarmed with is the one trusted most, so the Eight needs to know whether they will hold. The test looks like sharpness, an unexpected no, a hard truth said point-blank. If the sx8 code fits, there may be a plain calculation under it: better to find out now than in a crisis. Try saying it out loud, "I need to know you won't break," and ask what could replace the test.
Why do I cut someone off completely after a betrayal?
Whoever an Eight let come close without armor knows where to hit. After a betrayal, a partial exit is impossible: while that person stays a little nearby, they keep access. So in an sx8 a breakup can look like an amputation: number deleted, belongings returned within a day. If this is you, tell protection apart from revenge: the first shuts a door, the second keeps the person living in your head.
Why do I work best with just one partner?
The drive of an sx8 looks for one person who keeps the same pace and doesn't back down. On a team it scatters: some fall behind, others need persuading. With one partner the work runs like an argument at raised voices where both actually hear each other. If that sounds like you, pick partners for stamina over friendship: for an Eight with this instinct, an equal in strength beats a pleasant one.
