Enneagram sp9: where the appetite hides

sp9 came with the word appetite, and it lands almost like a charge: appetite is what people call it when someone eats a lot and wants a lot. Meanwhile the choice of restaurant, of vacation, even of your own birthday present may have gone to other people for years with an easy "I don't mind." Where appetite hides under that "I don't mind," and what feeds it, comes next. Check it scene by scene; the name is a poor guide here.

The code does not say which of the other two is second and which is neglected

What this instinct guards

  • spI cover my own needs first
  • soI read where I stand with people
  • sxI go all in on one person

Between work and home an sp9 has twenty minutes nobody sees. He pulls into the driveway, cuts the engine and sits: radio low, phone in the cup holder, the kitchen light on inside. Self-preservation, for a Nine, guards an even state in the body, and he needs that strip of quiet because walking in on people is easier from stillness than straight off the road.

One evening his wife asks what's wrong; she saw him from the window, just sitting there. No conversation comes of it, because nothing is wrong. The next day he starts stopping two exits early, in the far corner of a commuter park-and-ride lot, and the twenty minutes stay his; now nobody asks about them.

When the twins arrive and free time disappears entirely, the twenty minutes shrink to seven. He takes the trash out to the curb and comes back seven minutes later; five of them were spent in the car, engine off, window down. That is all that's left of his evening, and it goes not to sleep or food but to quiet.

02

How it colors the passion

  • The type's passion goes outward through the instinct
  • Countertype: the passion turns back against itself

Self-forgetting, which would rather never defend anything of its own, turns "want" into "need" once it works on self-preservation. Asked what he'd like for his fiftieth, an sp9 thinks it over honestly and says, "Batteries. There aren't any double As left." There isn't a single wish in the house, but there's always a list of what's needed, and the list only grows: a furnace filter, a new hose, snow tires.

Appetite in an sp9 wakes up where an answer should have. His sister calls to say she's putting their parents' lake cabin on the market, and he says, "Your call." By eight he's asleep on top of the covers in his clothes, eleven hours straight, and in the morning he remembers the good sleep better than the call.

At his annual physical he rates his knee pain a two, and the doctor, watching him get up from the chair, orders an MRI anyway. It shows a torn meniscus he has been mowing the lawn on since June. Self-forgetting reaches all the way into the body, the very thing self-preservation is supposed to look after best.

How it differs from the other two

so9, participation

Countertype

A new neighbor's floodlight shines into both of their bedrooms all night, and when the street asks what to do, both Nines first say, "Whatever everyone decides." Then the so9 spends a week going door to door, gets the neighbor to put the light on a timer, brings him cookies from the whole block, and by the end of the month runs the neighborhood Facebook group. The sp9 hangs blackout curtains, moves the bed to the other wall, and never goes over; a month later he sleeps better than before the light went up. What brings your calm back when something's off at home: a door you can close, or a shared job where everyone needs you?

sx9, fusion

Interrupted mid-sentence, both Nines let the unfinished thought go, and nobody notices. In the same spring both of their partners start swimming laps at the Y at six in the morning. Within two weeks the sx9 is in the next lane in a matching cap, and by summer knows the other person's pace better than their own. For the sp9 the alarm stays at seven-thirty, and he has the coffee made and a towel warm from the dryer when she gets home. If the person closest to you starts living on a different clock, what throws you more: that your own day got knocked out of shape, or that you're out of step with them?

Place in the stacking, and the neglected one

With this leading instinct, two stackings are possible

His daughter in Denver wants the sp9 closer: a condo two blocks from hers is for sale, the grandson is two, and her husband will move everything in a weekend. He keeps the house in Dayton, the driveway and everything his leading instinct rests on. He sees the grandson on Sunday video calls and twice a year at the airport, and by four the boy calls him iPad Grandpa.

Twenty-two years at the same distribution center, steady, never late, never in an argument. When the shift is broken up, the lists of who goes where are drawn up without him, and the manager signing his transfer has to ask his last name. That is neglected social in a man who forgets himself: he is missing from other people's memory because he never once wrote himself into it.

A new dress for their anniversary, navy, off the shoulder, and the first thing his wife hears when she comes down is, "Aren't you cold?" He means it, the evening is warm and easy, and the dress doesn't come out of the closet again. Neglected sexual meets heat with care for the body: care asks him to show no wish of his own, and there's nothing in it to object to.

What the test shows

  1. Everything separated: subtype and the full stacking

  2. Second and neglected close: subtype without the stacking

  3. Leading and second close: two candidates

The test reports four things, and the instinct is the one we're least sure about. We'd rather tell you that than bury it. For about half the people who take it, the three instincts come out too close to call, and when that happens we show you the top two instead of picking one. Social may come out higher for an sp9 on the result than it sits in life, and the reason is the language a Nine uses about peace at home: a dislike of arguments, a readiness to give way, wanting everyone to get along. Self-report turns that into what sounds like care for harmony among people, even though it rests on an even state in one's own body. The leading call may then carry a softer note, and if the gap is small enough the result will show two candidates.

Questions

How do I figure out what I want when I'm basically fine?

Fine is the body's report here: fed, rested, warm. It says nothing about wanting, and while the body is content the question seems unnecessary. Wanting is easier to find in small irritation than in thought: what bothered you, even for a minute, this past month? Behind a small annoyance there is often a want that never made it into words.

Why do I just want to lie around on vacation, and why does my family mind?

For self-preservation a vacation is the first real chance to even the body out: sleep, get warm, stop rushing. The family hears that as a no to them, when it is a way of coming back to yourself. Agreeing on your share ahead of time helps: two days of lying around with no reproach, then one day given to the family plan wholeheartedly, without sighing.

Why do I go weeks without calling friends I love?

A call means stepping out of an even state: gathering yourself, finding words, hearing news that might ask something of you. Days when everything runs on its own add up to silent weeks, and a friend drifts off not because anything cooled but because each evening was fine as it was. Tie the call to something physical and regular, like a Sunday walk, and it stops depending on mood.

Why is it easier to put up with discomfort than to ask for a change?

A request is a small argument: it has to be said out loud, and the other person may say no. The body, meanwhile, adjusts quietly and fast: a sweater, a different seat, getting used to it. So discomfort piles up where nobody sees it, sometimes not even you. Naming one small thing that bothers you each week, out loud, keeps the voice from falling out of practice.
