Enneagram so3: prestige without the gloss

The screenshot with so3 on it never went out to your group chat: prestige next to a Three would have looked like bragging, and explaining it felt worse. This page is about where this Three gets its weight in other people's eyes, and what that weight costs. If the leading instinct on the result ran neck and neck with the second, the neighboring subtype deserves the same attention as this one.

  1. leading
  2. second
  3. neglected

The code does not say which of the other two is second and which is neglected

What this instinct guards

  • spI cover my own needs first
  • soI read where I stand with people
  • sxI go all in on one person

In the parents' group chat for his son's class, a recommendation from this so3 lands like an announcement: he names a math tutor, and ten families book her the next day. A Three led by the social instinct guards that weight of word as something earned, and it was earned by a result, since the same tutor coached his son to a win at the county math contest. Doing well is not enough for this Three. What gets done has to become the yardstick other people measure by.

The orthodontist he suggested botches the braces on a girl in his son's class, and at nine at night her mother posts a long, furious message to the chat. Before anyone has replied, he is on the phone with her himself, by midnight a friend of a friend has her booked at the best practice in town for Monday, and in the morning his short, even update is sitting in the chat. By lunch the thanks are piling up, the mother's among them.

The year the family is down to one paycheck, he still throws the holiday dinner for twenty he has hosted for ten years. Folding chairs borrowed from the church, three nights of his own cooking in place of the caterer, and not one name cut from the list, not even the couples who stopped inviting him back.

How it colors the passion

  • The type's passion goes outward through the instinct
  • Countertype: the passion turns back against itself

Deceit that can't stand a rough draft gets a permanent audience in an so3, the circle, and hardens into a rule: the circle sees only the finished version. For three weeks of weekday evenings he takes lessons at the small hill outside town, so that in February, on the guys' trip to Colorado, he can come down a black run as if he grew up on skis. Nobody knows about the instructor, his wife included.

Prestige, for an so3, also gets built out of the shine of whoever sits at his table. For the book club's fifth anniversary he brings in a novelist he once ended up next to at a literary festival, and the whole evening the club talks about her. Everyone knows who got her there, and nothing more needs saying.

His wife leaves in March. By May the friend group hears it as his decision, measured and calm, and at a buddy's lake house he tells the story so evenly that they praise his maturity. He cries later, in the car at a gas station, and before walking in to pay he splashes his face with water from a bottle.

How it differs from the other two

  • This page
  • Countertype

sp3, security

Countertype

Both are up before anyone else in the house, and by eight each has something done: a run, two emails, dough rising on the counter. That summer a kitchen remodel wraps up at both their houses. The sp3 pays the last invoice, checks it against the budget, and invites nobody: the kitchen is done, and that is enough. The so3 throws a Saturday dinner in the new kitchen, and for him the remodel is finished the evening thirty guests have walked through and two have asked for the tile guy's number. When a big project wraps up, is it finished for you the moment you close the last item, or the moment the people whose opinion counts have seen it?

sx3, charisma

Ten minutes to get ready, and either of them looks like it took an hour. Both spend a winter restoring an old car. The so3 drives his to Cars and Coffee the first Saturday it runs, and the car is done once a crowd has gathered around it and somebody has posted it to the club page. The sx3 waits for a clear morning, puts one person in the passenger seat, and drives out to the lake at sunrise. When long work is finished, do you need the crowd around it, or one face beside you that you want to see right then?

Place in the stacking, and the neglected one

  1. so/sp/sx
    1. so
    2. sp
    3. sx
  2. so/sx/sp
    1. so
    2. sx
    3. sp

With this leading instinct, two stackings are possible

Two invitations for the same Saturday: a childhood friend turning forty at his cabin, six people, and a charity gala in town where his whole circle will be. He goes to the gala and sends the friend a warm text and a delivered cake. The toast to the guys who have been friends since first grade happens at the cabin without him, and the friend never sends the video.

With the social instinct leading and self-preservation neglected, an so3 treats his body by the same rules as his public face. At parties he stands all evening, straight-backed and easy, and nobody knows he has slept on the floor for two weeks because of his back, with the chiropractor booked for "after the holidays." Deceit works for an audience, and a back draws none.

Sexual in last place means the people closest to him get the same report the circle does. His sixteen-year-old daughter asks at the kitchen counter late one night whether he is happy and gets a list: "the addition is finished, Grandma is recovering, you got into the magnet program." She nods and goes up to her room, and the conversation she came down for never starts.

05

What the test shows

  1. Everything separated: subtype and the full stacking

  2. Second and neglected close: subtype without the stacking

  3. Leading and second close: two candidates

The test reports four things, and the instinct is the one we're least sure about. We'd rather tell you that than bury it. For about half the people who take it, the three instincts come out too close to call, and when that happens we show you the top two instead of picking one. Loving to make an impression, winning people over fast, lighting up under admiring looks: in a self-report these sound like the pull between two people, so an so3's answers can lean toward the sexual instinct, although this Three wants the whole room rather than one person in it. Such words raise the sexual score, and the result may then put it in the lead while the energy itself goes into standing among people.

Questions

How do I tell my friends things are not going well?

Start with one person, not the circle. Bad news told to everyone at once sounds, to an so3, like a bankruptcy notice, and told to one person it is simply a conversation. If the instinct call is right, you have probably spent years sharing news only once it was finished. Try telling one unfinished piece while it still hurts, and see what changes between the two of you.

Why does a friend's success please me less than I let on?

Because the circle is shared, and someone else's success shifts the scale everybody in it measures by. To an so3, a friend who gets what you lack rearranges the seating at the common table, so the joy has to be performed while a recount runs underneath. That recount, if you know it, is nothing to be ashamed of: you did not pick this friend for their place on a list.

Why do I go over who said what after a good evening?

An evening, for a Three whose leading instinct is social, ends not when the guests leave but when the tally is in: who laughed, who stayed quiet, who left early. That review is probably how you make sure the evening went well. Giving it a deadline helps: go over all of it before you fall asleep, and leave it alone in the morning.

Why do I take on volunteer roles I dread?

A seat on the PTA board or the condo board is, to an so3, a place in the circle with a name on it, and turning it down means giving up the chair. Assuming the result read your instinct right, the check is simple: would you do the same work if your name appeared nowhere? Where the answer is no, the role can go to someone else, since the weight rests on your word, not on the title.
