Enneagram sx3: who the charisma is for
The code sx3 and the word charisma came up while you were standing in a subway car, and in two stops the word managed to flatter and embarrass: it's what people say about talk-show hosts and politicians. Here it gets tested on something smaller, the one person this Three works for and what that work does to the Three. Whether it fits will come from the scenes, not the word, and the other two Three codes stay in play until you pick.
- leading
- second
- neglected
The code does not say which of the other two is second and which is neglected

What this instinct guards
- spI cover my own needs first
- soI read where I stand with people
- sxI go all in on one person
Hundreds of photos sit in sx3's phone, and the profile picture hasn't changed in three years: a shot his wife took at a diner, caught mid-sentence, the way one person sees him. A Three finds out what they're worth from whoever is looking. Here the sexual instinct narrows the lookers down to one, and sx3 recognizes his own face in the frame of someone who finds him interesting. The beach selfie is deleted that night; the diner shot has outlived three phones.
His wife comes back from their summer week in Maine with two hundred shots of rocks and gulls, and he turns up in three of them, at the edge, by accident. He says nothing. Over the winter he gets certified to skipper a sailboat, and in May, on a rental off Bar Harbor, she photographs him all day: at the tiller, soaked, laughing, a version of him she hasn't seen. This Three won't ask for attention. He becomes someone worth spending it on again.
The week his checking account is nearly empty is the week she flies home from a conference. Friday morning he's at the barber, at lunch he irons the shirt she once said she liked, and by evening he's at arrivals twenty minutes before the plane lands. Everything the week had in it goes into one minute: she comes through the doors and sees him.

How it colors the passion
- The type's passion goes outward through the instinct
- Countertype: the passion turns back against itself
Deceit, a Three's passion, needs the image to land, and in sx3 it plays to one listener. Every evening over dinner his wife gets his day in edited form: the loan the bank turned down becomes a bit about a very serious loan officer, and the doubt that chewed on him all morning is cut completely. A couple of years in, he remembers his weeks the way he told them to her.
At her parents' house he manages in one evening what she hadn't in ten years: her father, a man of very few words, brings the Navy album down from the closet shelf and talks through every page. Everyone at the table would call it charisma. sx3 knows what the table doesn't. For two weeks he read up on the ships her father served on, and he knew their names before the album was open.
For their tenth anniversary he books a rooftop table and a guitarist who will start their song exactly at dessert. She covers her face and cries, and in that second he isn't looking at her. He's looking at the guitarist, the lights, the server with the cake, checking whether it all landed. Happiness catches up a moment later, once he's sure. The more honest a moment is meant to be, the closer the director watches it.

How it differs from the other two
- This page
- Countertype
sp3, security
CountertypeBoth text ahead when they're running five minutes late, and give an exact time rather than "almost there." When a wife's little bakery closes in the spring, the two get different months out of it. sp3 opens a spreadsheet and reworks the year so that, without her income, nobody has to touch the college fund. sx3 calls a friend who runs a cooking school, and two weeks later twenty people are copying down his wife's tart recipe on a Saturday morning while she laughs for the first time since March. Which is harder for you to live with in months like that: a shrinking balance or a dimmed face across the table?
so3, prestige
A name heard once, both of them still have right a year later. At the finish line of their first ten-miler each has a medal and an hour before the train. so3 spends it at the sponsor wall where a photographer shoots finishers, and posts the photo with his time to the running club. sx3 scans the barrier for one face: if his wife made it, the medal rides home in her coat pocket, and if she got stuck in traffic he barely remembers the run. Which win goes flat faster for you: the one nobody heard about, or the one a single person missed?

Place in the stacking, and the neglected one
- sx/sp/so
- sx

With this leading instinct, two stackings are possible
In January sx3 has exactly enough set aside for new bedroom windows. His wife mentions in passing that she's never seen the northern lights, and in February they stand on a frozen lake outside Fairbanks: her best night in years. He remembers the windows in March, when the old frames leak cold air and they sleep in wool socks. A leading sexual instinct never asks which matters more.
When self-preservation is the neglected one, sx3 checks his body the way he checks his look: whether he seems tired, not whether he is. The gray face in the holiday photos gets a tanning bed and vitamins from an ad. The cough since November shows in no photo, and he sees a doctor in April, when his wife asks him to stop coughing in her ear at the movies.
Social sits in the neglected slot in the other stacking, and the image is built for one viewer only. Ten years into the marriage he has no friend who wasn't hers first: her college roommates, her coworkers and their spouses. After their first big fight he has nowhere to go and spends the night in the car in a grocery store lot, scrolling contacts with nobody to call.

What the test shows
Everything separated: subtype and the full stacking
Second and neglected close: subtype without the stacking
Leading and second close: two candidates
The test reports four things, and the instinct is the one we're least sure about. We'd rather tell you that than bury it. For about half the people who take it, the three instincts come out too close to call, and when that happens we show you the top two instead of picking one. In sx3's answers the social instinct can start to sound through. This Three's passion runs on attention to how he comes across to someone else and on a readiness to change tone to whatever works. In self-report the one person all of it is for drops out of view: what remains is concern for the impression one makes and adjusting to what others expect, and that is how the social subtype sounds too. In that case the result can name social as leading or put up two candidates, though all that work is aimed at a single connection.

Questions
Why do I get ready to see the person closest to me like it's an exam?
That evening probably is an exam for you: it's where you find out whether your image still works on the one person whose opinion outweighs everyone else's combined. Hence the shirt picked out the night before and a topic ready for the first few minutes. Try showing up as you are one time, with the day you actually had. If the evening doesn't fall apart, you're valued for more than the preparation.
Why am I jealous of my partner's hobbies more than of other people?
A hobby takes the very attention you see yourself in. Someone deep in pottery or a TV series isn't looking at you, and for this subtype that probably feels like an empty theater. Two moves suggest themselves: get better at the hobby than they are, or stage something brighter. There's also a quieter one: sit nearby while they work the clay, show nothing, and see that the connection holds anyway.
Why can work distract me from anything except a fight at home?
Work steadies a Three as long as there's a result to show. Here the footing is different: one person confirms the worth, and during a fight that person looks past you, so nothing you finish gets counted. The evening after a fight goes nowhere however many tasks you close. You probably need to make up to get your measure back, not out of politeness, and big decisions can wait for another night.
Why am I afraid of turning boring in a long relationship?
Someone close getting used to you is easy to mistake for fading interest, and for this subtype one person's interest is the measure of what you're worth. A quiet night on the couch feels like a lower grade, and the urge is to surprise them. In a long relationship the look warms from the fact that with you no act is needed, not from a new act. Ask what they love about ordinary evenings.
