Enneagram sp3: success kept off the record

Someone at home read "sp3, security" over your shoulder and snorted, as if they had known it for years. A snort is easy to agree with, but it doesn't settle a subtype. Below is what a Three with this instinct protects, where the wish to be noticed goes, and where it parts ways with the other two Threes. One paragraph that fits is a start, not a verdict: the code holds when all of them line up.

  1. leading
  2. second
  3. neglected

The code does not say which of the other two is second and which is neglected

What this instinct guards

  • spI cover my own needs first
  • soI read where I stand with people
  • sxI go all in on one person

In the drawer with the passports sits a real estate license she has renewed every two years and never once used. Under this instinct a Three guards neither an object nor a bank balance but her own ability to earn, and she keeps it in reserve. A Three proves she is somebody by what she can do; self-preservation turns that into a matter of getting by. As long as she has a skill someone would pay for tomorrow morning, she cannot go under.

What she picks up on first is the price of what she knows how to do going down. On her commute a podcast mentions that software now drafts the kind of closing paperwork she handles every week. Two lights from home she is scrolling through course listings at a red, and by the time she pulls into the driveway the first module is paid for. Nobody at dinner hears a word of it; the talk is about her son's grades.

Her son's braces eat the savings, and the first payment out after them is the license renewal with its continuing-ed credits, which could have waited till fall. Her one free evening between work and the kids' practices goes to an online exam on the new disclosure rules. The arithmetic is written down nowhere: braces go on once, while a skill has to be kept current or it stops paying.

How it colors the passion

  • The type's passion goes outward through the instinct
  • Countertype: the passion turns back against itself

Deceit, which needs someone around to appraise it, takes an unexpected shape under this instinct: the image of a person who needs no image at all. It shows in her car, a twelve-year-old sedan serviced strictly by the manual, though she could have bought new years ago. Asked why she keeps it, she says "it runs," and the answer comes a little too fast to be only about the car.

Security, in her hands, shows in the family group chat. The relatives are working out who will handle moving Grandma into her new apartment, she types "on it," and the thread goes quiet. By Saturday there are movers, labeled boxes and a new faucet in the bathroom, and nobody asks a follow-up question, because in that chat her word has never once fallen through.

Both other Threes let deceit work in plain view, before a crowd or before one person; in sp3 the instinct moves it out of sight. At the PTA picnic at the end of the school year, the president thanks another mom for the fall fundraiser, a woman who did little more than hand out flyers on the day. sp3 claps with everyone else, and that night she opens a note on her phone she has kept for three years: everything she has done for the school, itemized and dated. She adds a line about the fundraiser. Nobody has ever read it.

How it differs from the other two

so3, prestige

While everyone else is still saying "oh no," both Threes are already moving. Hail hits the whole subdivision, and by evening so3 is running the neighbors' meeting, handling the local news crew and noticing who on the street will follow her lead. sp3 by the same evening has had the roof inspected, photographed every dent for the insurer and filed the claim, and nobody on the street learns her roof was hit too. When trouble lands on everyone at once, where does your first evening go: into quietly putting your own place right, or out to the people in front of whom there is now room to stand?

sx3, charisma

Both walk faster than whoever they are with and keep ending up waiting at the crosswalk. When a husband gets laid off, the next month of evenings runs two ways. sx3 turns into his coach: rewrites the resume with him, drills interview questions, picks the shirt, and her best moment of the month is hearing him sound sure of himself again. sp3 reworks the household numbers, moves the vacation, finds out exactly what the severance covers, and her best moment is knowing the house will hold for six months even if the search drags on. When someone close has the ground go out from under them, where do your evenings go: into their belief in themselves, or into making sure nothing at home cracks without their paycheck?

Place in the stacking, and the neglected one

  1. sp/so/sx
    1. sp
    2. so
    3. sx
  2. sp/sx/so
    1. sp
    2. sx
    3. so

With this leading instinct, two stackings are possible

The realtor is still praising the lake view, and her answer is already no. The house at the address that makes people look twice would take a thirty-year mortgage and the whole cushion. She picks the smaller place by the highway, paid off in fifteen. An address that would speak for her goes, and ground under her feet that nobody will ever ask about stays.

Social can sit in the neglected spot, and then nobody watches how her silence reads. At her twentieth reunion, classmates learn from somebody's husband that she owns two laundromats, and the table goes quiet: "You never said a word." She was not bragging, she thought; they think she found them not worth telling. Without witnesses, deceit turns modesty into aloofness, and she never sees it.

Where sexual is the neglected one, things running smoothly stand in for a spark. For their anniversary she books a financial planner, then dinner, and is pleased: useful, well thought out. He is polite through dessert and checks his phone a lot. What he misses is on none of her lists; deceit casts her here too as the dependable person, not a live one.

What the test shows

  1. Everything separated: subtype and the full stacking

  2. Second and neglected close: subtype without the stacking

  3. Leading and second close: two candidates

The test reports four things, and the instinct is the one we're least sure about. We'd rather tell you that than bury it. For about half the people who take it, the three instincts come out too close to call, and when that happens we show you the top two instead of picking one. Some sp3 answers can sound like the sexual instinct speaking. A Three whose whole footing is her work may honestly say that in a bad month a project she is on fire about keeps her going, and that without it life goes flat. Read that way, it is intensity gathered at one point, and the result may rank sx level with sp or above.

Questions

Why does it bother me when my partner posts our vacation online?

Maybe the photos are not the point. In a Three led by self-preservation, whatever might go in a shop window tends to go into the reserve instead, so someone else's posting can feel like spending it: a trip you earned and planned, put up for strangers to rate. If that rings true, the talk with your partner is less about privacy and more about what the trip means to you and why you want to keep it.

Why do I Venmo a friend back the same night she covers my dinner?

Probably because even a small, friendly debt touches the place where your calm is kept. For a Three with this instinct, paying her own way is standing on her own feet, and someone else's check turns her into the one provided for rather than the one providing. Your friend most likely meant a treat and got a refund. Next time you could just say thanks and pick up her check some other night.

Why does my sister spending everything on travel make me so angry?

Possibly because her spending lands right where you put your own effort: the reserve for a bad day. In a Three led by self-preservation there can be a quiet certainty that when your sister runs out of money, the call will come to you. If so, the anger is less about her trips than about the role of backup you took on without a word. That role can be talked about openly, and the trips left to her.

Why do I push my kid toward a trade instead of letting them find themselves?

Likely because you are handing them the same insurance you keep for yourself: a skill that will feed them whatever happens. For a Three with this instinct that is care, while the kid may hear distrust of whatever interests them. Try asking what they would want to be insured against, and compare their answer with your own list.
